WINNING: Kobe GOES OFF and so does the Lakers Losing Streak

On the heels of Byron Scott becoming the Worst Lakers Coach of ALL-TIME, the TEAM avoids further futility in snapping a ten-game losing streak and avoiding the LONGEST LOSING STREAK in LA LAKER HISTORY

When Kobe Bryant scores 30 or MORE, the Lakers WIN Everytime (Lakers are 3-0 this season when Kobe scores 30+)

Cookin INDEED!  He was LEAD chef on the evening in the NBA and a season high for the MAMBA

38 points / 5 Rebounds / 5 Assists /   7/11 3 PT / 2 Steals  / +5

And the Laker Girls Never looked so GOOD...

Good ol number 24 went OFF but other players like D'Angelo Russell (18/3/3) and Julius Randle had nice games too.

Randle (15 pts/ 12 rebs) is 19th in "double-doubles" with 19 (over All-Star players like Draymond Green and Paul Millsap) and remains SNUBBED ...

Tarik Black saw 20 minutes of PT including the final 2:55 in the first quarter and extended into the second.

He tied D'Angelo with HIGHEST +/- of any Laker with +15 after the first half of play.

Tarik had injured his foot, which was x-rayed today (2-3-16)with negative results.

He left the game at the 2:12 mark in the first quarter.  The TEAM was up 57-45 at that moment. Tarik came into the game at the 2:55 mark in the first.  The Lakers were down 24-21.  Not ONLY did Tarik Black Play those consecutive minutes, but Roy Hibbert was out this entire stretch and only logged SEVEN first-half minutes.

Hibbert ended the game with a -9.

                    Black? +3

And WHEN BLACK PLAYS his "plus/minus" is one of the highest on the TEAM!

Tarik Black's has TWO "INACTIVES" (street clothes) and about 20 minutes of play in total over the previous FIVE GAMES.

Tarik played 20 in this one.  Most of his play was in the first half (when he then injured his foot).

THIS is a MAJOR CHANGE in Byron Scott's foxhole.

The numbers, for Tarik Black, will NOT always tell the story.  At one point Tarik had better than what Byron Scott Fan Boy Don MacLean calls

"a triple couple" (a couple a points, a couple of boards and a couple of fouls..)

Black had a "quadruple couple" at one point: 2 pts, 2 boards, 2 blocks and 2 assists.  He added 2 more BOARDS to this tally, ending with 4 boards.

The greatest positive play took place during that first-through-second quarter play when Black was on the floor for the LAKERS.

Randle and Mamba helped out in quarter 1 with 6 and 5 points respectively.

The Lakers are 5-5 when leading at the end of the FIRST QUARTER.

Tarik Black appears to be FRONT and CENTER

and doing quite well..

Fyron SCOTT: Los Angeles Lakers Coach Byron Scott needs to go

Are the Los Angeles Lakers Preparing to Fail?  What is the current status and culture IN and OUT of the Locker Room and BEYOND?

My "fanship" of the Los Angeles Lakers began about the same time that Dr. Jerry Buss happened to take majority interest in the Los Angeles Lakers.  I consider that Luck.

"3-2-1...Kareem with the sky hook at the buzzer" was a regular part of my basketball shooting rituals as a kid.

I witnessed the beginning and end of now Coach Byron Scott's NBA Playing Career.  His High School ball was played not too far from mine.

He was second, after Michael Jordan, in shooting guards for me.
This is not to say that I thought he was the second-best shooting guard next to that MJ.  This is to say that it was Michael because it WAS all about Jordan and because I was a Lakers fan I did NOT look any further than Morningside High School's own Byron Scott.

I developed the same technical shooting form and same type of play.  Byron Scott was a tough, hard-nosed and fundamentally correct player that played with some of the Greatest Collection of Talent the Lakers and the NBA have EVER seen.

So, for THOSE reasons and many others, it has been very difficult to watch this team... this franchise be run lower and lower on the rungs of NBA success.  Especially when they are used to the Championship RINGS of success.

Players, Teams, Franchises have ALL leap-frogged past the Lakers not JUST in the "win" column but in NBA Prestige and Stature.

Speaking of Wins:

Precedent has been set within the organization.  The Cleveland CAVS, on January 22, 2016, decided to move in a different direction when they fired David Blatt who was at the helm of the East's Very Best Team and Record.

"What I see is that we need to build a collective spirit, a strength of spirit, a collective will," Griffin said. "Elite teams always have that, and you see it everywhere. To be truly elite, we have to buy into a set of values and principles that we believe in. That becomes our identity."
_David Griffin, Cleveland Cavaliers General Manager  (your move, Mitch...)

Hiring and Firing should NOT necessarily be based solely on WINS and Losses.  The franchise (Lakers) AND fans KNEW things would be rough given the injuries, moves (trades) gone wrong and now moving forward with draft picks.

But.. Is the current culture of the Lakers too far mired in misery to the point of players gathering in some sort of bond that creates mutiny?

I don't really know.

Is Byron motivating his players beyond the seemingly hard-nosed approach of benching guys like Nick Young so his effort might increase?

Byron's tactics in some of those isolated incidents will probably prove successful.  The decision to bring both  Russell and Randle off-the-bench made big news when that happened; but this has forced both of these players to PLAY better ball as a result.  However, these players, along with players like Tarik Black, Metta World Peace and Nick Young seem to be unhappy and something tells ME it is not JUST about the Losing.

When a Coach has to explain to the Media why he is NOT playing a player like Tarik Black that should say something, right?

His explanation was that he told Tarik that he wanted him to be more like Dennis Rodman and Ben Wallace and the reporters who sit in the locker room ACTUALLY Believe this garbage.

The stats show what Tarik does but ALL you really need to do is WATCH him play:

This might sound silly but one thing that struck me as being curious is that ALL of the SPURS were wearing Shoes of their TEAM colors: SILVER/ BLACK / White

The Lakers had several players (seen in clip) that were wearing colors of the SPURS as well.  One thing is certain: Not ONE SPUR was wearing a gold or a purple and gold shoe and there is

NO WAY Gregg Popovich would ever allow that to happen.

Where is the discipline?  Where is the unity?

 Where is the TEAM?

This gentleman (video) tells the story of Kareem, Wooden and how Coach John Wooden would have his team tie their shoes together.  You can  forward that clip to the 2:05 minute mark but I found that video useful to illustrate a few things.

"John Wooden, the Coach of the Century (ESPN), first day of practice started with socks and SHOES."

This would make an impact on EVERY Bruin that played with him including Bill Walton, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Marques Johnson.

So, I don't care about their "RECORD" necessarily, I care how the TEAM is responding.  I care about their function and unity given the very best possible position to BE SUCCESSFUL.

And I CARE that this TEAM not coming out wearing all the same colors as their opponent and I care that more than ONE LAKER wore shoe colors of their opponent on game night.

SO...Back to the drawing board Lakers and..

+Los Angeles Lakers  (shouldn't Kobe have the shoe deal with his OWN TEAM?)

Start with the SHOES!

Then lose the manbuns, the head in hands and the lethargic play.

other notes from John Wooden ...

"Failing to prepare is preparing to FAIL."
_John Wooden

Jordan Clarkson commented on how the Lakers can learn about ball movement by watching the Spurs.  Yes, JC... You can ALSO learn about TEAM, UNITY, Camaraderie, DISCIPLINE and Communication.

BEAT LA: LAKERS LOSE TO PHILLY

the WIN-less 76ers get off the snide and get their first win of the season...

(courtesy NBA_ 76ers)

The emotions and energy were high Tuesday (12/1/15) Night as Kobe Bryant returned to his Philadelphia roots in the first "away" game of his farewell tour.

Kobe came out on fire in the first:

Kobe looked good;  REALLY good to start.  But, Vintage Kobe waned and when it was ALL over, the 76ers "BEAT LA."

There was no Dr. J in uniform, although there was a Julius (Randle) of a different ilk.  There was no MO (Cheeks) but momentum played in favor of the Lakers led by Kobe Bryant.  With an 8 Point halftime lead the Lakers were looking to keep Philly in the "L" column but the "MO" was shifting by then and the Lakers ended up producing the same amount of points in the second half as they did in quarter one (33).  But there was no THIRTY-THREE (Kareem) and No Magic like there was in 1982:  The Lakers took home the Larry O'Brien Trophy then in a four games to two NBA Finals match-up of  these two franchises.

Perhaps this was poetic justice from years gone by.  It was in the Eastern Conference Finals between the Boston Celtics and the 76ers, at Boston Garden, where the Celtics' Fans began the now infamous (and extremely obnoxious) chant of, "Beat LA!"

There were some bright moments beyond the Mamba ripping his first threes of the game.  D'Angelo Russell despite what "numbers" might indicate is improving and steadfastly maturing.  He is handling the rock extremely well and finding guys with crisp and needle-threading precision:

SHOTS: KB20 : Kobe Bryant Announces his retirement and Keeps on Truckin' (or Chuckin)

KB24, the Black Mamba, Kobe (the Man, the Myth, the LEGEND) Bean Bryant Announced on Sunday (11/29/15) that he would be retiring after this season.  Perhaps this is something that we already knew.  Perhaps MANY fans did NOT want to hear this news or are still in denial over this REALITY that as much as wine DOES get better with AGE, this "Vino" wearing number 24 for the purple and gold has been                                          struggling.

"My Mind can handle the Grind but my body knows it's time to say Goodbye."_KB

By now most people on the planet are aware of this "news" as much as they are aware that Kobe is at all-time lows in shooting percentages.  BUT, THAT is NOT stopping the Mamba from shooting the rock.  His Coach seems fine with it.  Many fans are not.  Some fans have been asking for Kobe to NOT play.  Personally, I have no problem with him playing or even racking up 36 minutes or so a night.  But the shots Kobe?  Bryant had the wrong "420" on Sunday Night against the Pacers:

  •  13 Points (his draft position in 1996)
  • 4 Shots Made (His Coach's Old Number)
  • 20 Shot Attempts (The number of seasons played with the Lakers: NBA Record)

One might argue that if Jordan Clarkson (22 pts on 8/15 FG) OR Nick Young (22 on 8/17) take some of those 20 shots the Lakers end up with a dub Sunday Night.

A young Lakers Fan recently said this to me,

"I don't care what Kobe does.  He is my favorite player of ALL-TIME.  He is my idol.  Let him do what he wants (take all the shots).  He deserves it and I want to see him play and shoot as much as possible because it is his LAST season."

Selfishly, I would like to see Kobe achieve "30 points per game" by averaging 10 points and 10 assists with Clarkson and Russell on the wings and Kobe serving up dimes, but I cannot argue with the young fan's perspective.

And, if Kobe isn't Kobe then we would NOT have had a moment like this Sunday Night:

It is moments like these that captivated us from the very beginning.  The game-winners, the buzzer-beaters, the clutch and "double-clutch" shots in crunch time and the ridiculously athletic maneuvers that made players like Paul George pattern their games after Bryant.  Fitting, in ways, that he drains that trey off the inbound pass while George was guarding him.

It felt like a Roy Macavoy moment where we were ALL watching Kobe take shot after shot after shot with no real success, but when he hit that shot...

Just like Dr. Molly Griswold (Tin Cup) said, "Just knock it on, let her rip!"

So, "Let her Rip KOBE!"

In "other" NEWS:

Jimmer Fredette started for the Westchester Knicks of the D-League and dropped in 37 points.

37 Pts, 12-17 FG, 2-5 3 Pt, 11-12 FT, 4 Reb, 8 As, 1 Stl

When does Jimmer get his shot?  A guy who averaged 28.9 his senior year (2010-11) has YET to get a real chance in the NBA (career avg 14 minutes per game)

I suggest two things:

1) Every time Kobe takes a shot, "we" do too.  The good news is that by the time each game ends we might not have any recollection of how miserable things went.  We can call the drinking game " #KB20 " or something... Vino Blackout?  Mamba Mayhem? Kobe Sake?

2) Jimmer and Kobe shoot (hoops NOT drinks) it out.  Winner gets to stay in the NBA.

Shut UP and Dance: The Los Angeles Lakers need to learn how to dance better ...

Laker Talk reigns supreme in my world and during a recent chat with a friend it was mentioned,

"The Lakers Just need to learn how to Dance."

For your listening pleasure:

I paused and looked at my friend who proceeded to say,

"Yeah, you can put the two most talented dancers in the world together but that doesn't necessarily mean they will dance well together," he said emphatically.

"The Lakers have talent," he continued, "But, Can they dance together?  Can they Play together?  Because right now, they're not dancing (well) together."

Makes sense, I said, "If we are talking about gelling, camaraderie and unity, this does seem to be an issue."  There were moments in the last game versus Orlando that I thought I saw slight "dissing" (on the floor) from a couple of the Vets towards D'Angelo.

Is there is a disconnect?  Is this about the mixture of "talent" and individuals including an aged Kobe Bryant who has already missed the last two and now possibly a third in a row: "Rest" and "Sick" are being used as his excuses or ailments.  Is THIS the same Kobe that dropped free throws after tearing his achilles?

Achilles' Last Stand, if you will _ Zep

As a kid I remember seeing footage of Lynn Swan taking ballet so he could improve on things like double toe-touching while catching a ball going out of bounds.

Hey, maybe some of these Lakers could use a little help there (footwork) too.

Maybe Football knows something that "we" don't

But, the point is this:  Coach or No Coach, talent or NO talent, THIS team needs to figure out how to work together, as a unit, or else they will continue to suffer "Ls" and those "Ls" might lead to an early departure of Byron Scott whose head is ALREADY being called for.

I don't blame people for suggesting so.  The same thing happened with Mike D'Antoni.  BUT, After going through Mike Brown to Mike D'Antoni to Byron Scott, the most successful coach has been:

Albeit a very small sample size he had success with the Lakers.  Additionally, at what point do you STOP the coaching carousel, sit back and allow a team to play some ball.

We did know that THIS team was NOT necessarily a playoff team, correct?  I say THAT because I believe that ANYONE TEAM can beat ANY OTHER team on ANY given Day.

That being said, we realize how stacked the West is and that the Lakers are starting a 19 year old at point who has been thrust into action with two "other" rookies (granted both are sophmore players).

Progress is happening and THAT is what MANY fans really want to see.  Yes, a "double u" is nice but rather than seeing RE-gression we hope we see PRO-gression.

One THING IS CERTAIN: You definitely need to have the right dance partner(s) if you want to win.

"The rumba is a vertical expression of a horizontal desire" _JLO

Speaking of horizontal AND vertical desires..

Happy Friday

There is no "D" in Los Angeles: The Lakers may ONLY be able to D-Fend the legacy of Kobe Bryant

I will forever remember that once there was a gal and she said:

"I was watching a football game with "so-and-so" and she said, "D Gate?  What IS "D Gate?"

After being puzzled for awhile the gal said back to "so-and-so" to say, "Oh...you mean "D-Fence?!"

The Lakers, right now, seem to be more like "so-and-so" showing no real "SIGN" that they even know what "DEFENSE" is let alone what to do with "IT."

Dear Los Angeles Defenders:  "we" realize you have some of the D-League's top (scoring) prospects: Vander Blue, Manny Harris, et al.  However, the Lakers really need to get players in to play defense.  Guards, Bigs..it doesn't matter.  D-E-V-E-L-O-P the D in D-Gate PLEASE!

Otherwise...

"yaaa, dude." THAT was Horrible and only ONE example of defensive lapses for the Lakers who, seemingly, LET the Heat just waltz right up to the basket ALL game long.

If the Lakers show extreme deficiencies on the Defensive end perhaps it's time to get creative so I asked "Coach:"

Indeed.  This is fundamentally correct.  I would like to put it another way though.  When I coach youth basketball, the biggest challenge is teaching defense and blocking out.  Young kids, initially, really struggle with the idea of putting their body onto another player to prevent them from getting the rebound.  Defense is a huge challenge as well as the offensive player always has the advantage and young players have a hard time "keeping up" with the ball.  Hence, we see a lot of ZONE in youth ball.  This CAN get them away from learning the defensive principles in a Man-to-Man.  My approach is to teach the core essentials in M 2 M but limiting each player to their "zone" or quadrant.  This way I can compensate for the lack of quickness and D as compared to the speed and skill on offense.

Just sayin.. The Lakers DO have some young players so perhaps they need to be coached MORE like Youth basketball players (?)

OR...

Maybe the Lakers CAN play inspired ball (vs ORL @ 4pm) from people that have served and protected our freedom(s) so that WE can play and watch basketball.

“He has to start getting it, just like the other young guys have to start getting it, and if they don’t, they won't play as much,” Scott said Friday, an hour before the Lakers played the Brooklyn Nets. “Playing time in this league is a very precious thing and I don’t want our guys to take that for granted. Missing assignments on a continuous basis is not going to go unnoticed. You’ve got to start developing and doing a better job on that end of the floor.”_ Mike Bresnahan, LA Times 11/6/15

May I suggest that THIS apply to ALL Lakers.  You have to earn it.  At this point I would activate Bobby Sacre and start him in tonight's matchup.

WHY?

Because.  NO ONE Else is defending the rack.

ALL of the Laker BIGS are allowing too many points in the paint and making the opponent's front-court (4 and 5 spots) to look like all-stars.  If I start and play a player who has NOT played then THIS might light a fire under someone that needs it.

Thank YOU to ALL whom have served this great Nation!

PEACE

Lakers go from UGLY to FUGLY in loss to Sacramento Kings

Something "pretty" before the U-G-L-Y
Rondo, Cousins lead Kings to 132-114 win over Lakers

Any Surprise Here?

Never NICE to read a headline where two guys that were prominently spoken of regarding a potential move to bring them to SoCal end up tearing "you" a new one..(and they play for NoCal (ouch))

The reality is that the Kings have an All-Star in Cousins anchoring in the middle AND a former 4-time All-Star and NBA Champion Point Guard Rajon Rondo guiding their squad.  Add in a solid NBA veteran in Rudy Gay, an exciting and athletic draft pick in Cauley-Stein, one of the better back up point guards in Darren Collison and new additions like Belinelli and you have the makings of a more than half-way decent squad.

It is reasons like these on TOP of the fact that the West is so stacked that we are able to shrink down the litmus totem and realize where the Lakers are really at:

The Lakers start one of the greatest players of all-time, but in the previous two seasons combined, has played about half of a full 82, a 19 yr old rookie at perhaps the toughest position in this current NBA, a second year player with 14 minutes of experience after a season ending injury, a slumbering BIG that poses no threat offensively and JC (the best player on the Lakers).

I said it.

But Kobe..

Kobe what?

The drama of LA is no match for the ongoing soap series that is Kobe Bryant.  Do we really need to give THAT much attention to where ESPN ranks him and what Kobe has to say?

Fuck Rankings

I got news for you: the reality is that Kobe Bryant should be lucky to be "ranked" in the top 100 right now considering how infrequent he has been on the floor of late.  Sure, with health, Kobe is STILL one of the best and no doubt top 5 or top 10 guard worthy.

But, and it IS a BIG BUT.. he has NOT been healthy. Period.  End of conversation.

And, the Lakers, once again, start the season out in record fashion (The Lakers gave up 80 Points in the Paint) and to be giving up 122 points per game is not ONLY an embarrassment but has become the "norm" over the past three seasons for this esteemed franchise.

Face-Palmers unite:  If B Scott had hair he would be pulling it out.

At some point don't "we" have to ask the question:

Where is the D at Coach?

Mini Riles?  We keep hearing of the focus on defense and the intense training camp but "actions" will ALWAYS be louder than "words" in my book and the Lakers are pathetic in the defensive category and have been the past few seasons.

We sort of expected poor defensive rankings with the roster that Mike D'Antoni had and his basketball principles and philosophy.

Byron Scott though?

In fairness to D'Antoni, at some point Byron will become heavily scrutinized especially NOW since there is more data for management to evaluate.

But, apparently, "WHO" is at the helm makes NO DIFFERENCE.  The rosters have changed.  The coaches have been bouncing in off the ongoing retred carousel in hopes to turn this ship around.

"I told my team they had to be ready when the game starts, but they weren't ready," Lakers coach Byron Scott. "I wish I did have an answer for what happened. If I did I would solve it." _ nba.com

Coach: I'm wondering now how inspire your troops.  If THIS is you reply to what happened I am very concerned.  You're the COACH.

"We gave up 80 points in the paint. That's a lot to give up," Bryant said. "But they got a lot of penetration and on the ones they didn't convert, they got offensive rebounds and converted those." _nba.com

I know that Kobe Bryant has had the "C" permanently affixed to his #24 but perhaps we need to call him, "Captain Obvious."

Excerpts from an article by Joey Ramirez _ lakers.com

Defense Absent in Lopsided Loss

Scott let the team know his disappointment during their 48-minute defensive lapse that allowed 80 points in the paint — the most by any team over the past 20 years, per Elias Sports Bureau.
“I told them at halftime, ‘Sooner or later, you’ve got to man up,’” Scott said after Friday’s loss. “Sometimes it doesn’t come down to Xs and Os. You’ve got guys going at you. You’ve got to man up.”
“We’re gonna learn going through the fire,” he said. “The young guys are going to have to learn quickly and the older guys are going to have to adjust as well.”
The 7-foot-2 Hibbert bolstered L.A.’s interior defense when he was on the floor, as he swatted five shots in 21 minutes.

“They set the tone from the beginning of the game and that was pretty much it,” said Julius Randle, who shot just 1-of-4 and had five turnovers in 16 minutes. “It was over from the beginning.”

REALLY?

Well, Julius Randle, you ARE technically correct since we know you got your asses wooped but to respond this way is NOT something ANY athlete should publicly say.  Please go run the hill to Griffith Observatory and THINK about what you said.  Clearly, Julius YOU gave up and your stat line reflects:

3 points, 1 assist, 1 Rebound, 5 Turnovers ?! in 16 minutes

You are a young player, Julius, so I'm not sure if YOU are aware of this term:

FUGLY

FUCKING UGLY

"BRO"

And, so it will go as we ride the Highs and Lows of resting our hopes and success on three very young and inexperienced players, a cast-away Center and a player that has yet to play a "full" season (min 58 games) since 2012-13.

Maybe we need some Fish...

I know of one that went to try and "save New York"
