GOOD FRIDAY (for the Lakers?)

The Lakers GM, Mitch Kupchak, and Coach Mike D'Antoni have yet to have their "exit interview."  The players, meanwhile, had theirs between Thursday 4/17/14 and Friday, 4/18/14.  Many people might have anticipated an announcement as to whether the Lakers plan on keeping their Coach going forward.  Perhaps a bit odd since the coach does have one-year left on his NBA contract (a guaranteed year).  Mitch Kupchak said a few times during his presser that Coach D'Antoni has "two years left on his contract."

TWO MORE YEARS?!

        He also added,

"If something changes we will let you know."

Now, if you are a supporter of D'Antoni you might hold value in the remark regarding the two years (the second year is a team option).  You may also relish in the fact that Mitch said,

"Under the circumstances, I'm not sure if anybody could have done a better job than he did."

There were many people on Twitter that misrepresented Kupchak's quote on Friday.

Perhaps more was said in what was NOT said by the sincere, stoic, and esteemed Mitch Kupchak.  Things like,

"We, the Laker Orgainzation, truly feel that Coach D'Antoni got a raw deal this season for a variety of reasons.  Most notably, the injuries to Steve Nash and Kobe Bryant.  Mike has two years left on his current contract and we are looking forward to keeping Mike as our head coach through next season in spite of what any rumors or popular opinion might be in the media.  The media does NOT know all of the data nor understand fully our plans for the future.  Mike figures to be a part of those plans."

This, again, is what we DID NOT HEAR...

The other things NOT heard were the facial expressions by Mr. Kupchak.  Spoken Words tell "A Version" of a story certainly.

And, once the spoken word become text it is up to interpretation on how those words are understood or conveyed.  Proper context often goes missed.  And, media today take full advantage of the sound bites and quick hitting excerpts to slant and skew an article.

That being said, the video clips, or visual portions of interviews can tell a much more important part of the story.

You can watch the video yourself to create your own story and understanding.  I found it interesting, to say the least, that Mr. Kupchak became visibly upset when asked questions about the future of Mike D'Antoni, especially for someone with such a "poker-face."

"If something changes, we'll let you know." Would YOU play poker with Mitch?

Mr. Kupchak seemed perturbed when asked if the unpopularity of Coach D'Antoni would play a part in the decision to keep him going forward.  Mitch's remark was that he was NOT aware of any poll that had been taken...

James Worthy, incidentally, said THIS about Mike D'Antoni's Press Conference:

"I did not have a lot of closure here, because it felt evasive and not getting to the point.  We know we had injuries, we know that it was tough for the coaches to project anything, but I can find ways where they could have played harder, and use players that were playing efficiently.."
